July 30, 2008 NYSDOT SIGNS ON ANOTHER ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY GROUP Volunteer Group Commits to Picking Up Roadside Litter in Monroe County
The New York State Department of Transportation announced today that another volunteer group has agreed to help pick up litter along a section of state highway in Monroe County.
The Sigma Lamba Upsilon/Senoritas Latinas Unidas Inc. has adopted a section of Route 251 from West Henrietta Road to East River Road in Henrietta, Monroe County.
Their commitment to pick up litter spans two years from July 2008 through July 2010. The group will be asked to pick up trash at least four times a year. Safety training, safety gear, garbage bags, pick-up service and disposal will be provided by NYSDOT. Blue and white road signs will be erected to recognize their contribution to the community.
The roster of adopters in Monroe County now has approximately 136 groups with close to 2550 volunteers to help keep the state highways clean. They cover about 300 miles of roadsides.
"On behalf of NYSDOT, I thank you for your commitment to keep our community litter-free," Regional Director Kevin O'Buckley said. "Your volunteerism also serves as a reminder for everyone to properly dispose of their trash, instead of tossing it along our roadsides."
Plenty of state highway sections are still available for adoption in Monroe County. Contact Adopt a Highway Coordinator Susan Miles at 272-3400 for more information and an application.
